Among the 4, 320 recorded cases in the Greenland epidemic there were only 77 deaths, a
rate of 18 per 1, 000. The mortality was much lower than might have been expected,
probably owing to penicillin treatment of complications combined with the modification of the
disease produced by sero-prophylaxis of some 1, 000 persons. Both of these measures
were mobilized from Denmark in time to save hundreds of lives. The incubation period was
