It is clear from both cross-sectional and natural history studies that only a minority of patients
with risk factors for developing nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) will progress from
simple fatty liver (steatosis) to inflammation (steatohepatitis), fibrosis, and ultimately cirrhosis
