Tissue-specific antigens are expressed in the thymic medulla under the influence of the
AIRE gene, suggesting that unresponsiveness to these peripheral antigens is a result of
central tolerance. New data on T cell tolerance in AIRE−/− mice strongly support this
hypothsis.
