H Gram-negative, spiralshaped, microaerophilic bacteria isolated from human gastric
mucosa, was discovered only just over a decade ago'. Much interest has focused since then
on this primatespecific pathogen, and it has been suggested to be a causative agent of
chronic active gastritis (reviewed in Ref. 2), and gastric and duodenal ulcers (reviewed in
Ref. 3). More recently, H. pyfori infections have also been associated with the development
of gastric adenocarcinoma4,-i and mucosaassociated lymphoid tissue
